For all of the upsides to being a dad, there are some downsides that go with it. People act so weird around babies. Maybe it's just me. Below is my shortened list (my wife tells me to be more positive) of what drives me cray-cray.
My Baby can't talk to you:
He's 11 months old. When you ask him what his name is he won't respond. He won't tell you his opinion on nuclear proliferation, or Obama v. Romney. So, don't put the parents in the awkward situation of guessing whether they should answer or if you're just asking a rhetorical question in the least efficient way possible.
Who are you talking to:
I'm just a bit confused because you're asking a question that seems to be directed at me, but it's in a baby voice and you're looking at my baby. "How was work today" is not a question he will be able to answer because he's not even one, but you are talking in a baby voice. Oh, I get it. You're trying to kill two birds with one stone.
He just ate:
So why are you reaching into his to-go cheerio bowl with your unwashed hands and insisting on feeding the baby? I know that his pot-belly and fat rolls give the impression that he hasn't eaten in 3 days, but he can probably go without you feeding him food from your half-eaten plate.
He just woke up:
However you feel like rocking him to sleep. You must do it. He seems so sleep deprived and it's important, nay, you're morally obligated by the standards set forth by our society to make sure he can go to sleep.
So, when you run into some old friends or your extended family at Thanksgiving, bear these frustrations in mind. Some parents are more forgiving than others.
